Accessibility
We want every grown-up to be able to use this site, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use.
What we aim for
We build and test this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We test with a keyboard, with automated checks, on phones and computers, with high-contrast colours, and with reduced motion switched on.
What you can expect today
- You can reach every link, button and form with a keyboard. The focus ring stays visible, and the page moves so that nothing sits on top of it.
- Text and form fields have strong contrast, including on phones.
- The animation at the top of the home page has a Pause button that works with a mouse, a finger or a keyboard. If your device is set to reduce motion, the animation never plays.
- Pictures that carry meaning have text descriptions.
- Nothing on the site plays sound on its own, and our episodes load only when you press play.
- The mobile menu and the sign-up pop-up keep your place and can be closed with the Escape key.
What we're still working on
- Captions. Our videos on YouTube have YouTube's automatic captions for now. We are checking and correcting them so that every episode has accurate captions.
- Printable activities. Six of our printable PDFs have real text but are not yet tagged for screen readers, and one, Pip Finds a Pattern, is a picture with no text. We are remaking them. Until then, email us and we'll send the words of any activity in plain text, or read it through with you.
- Video descriptions. We are checking whether each episode needs extra narration for anything that is only shown on screen.
